(ĐN)- More than 1,000 athletes from 27 cities and provinces nationwide are gathering in Ho Chi Minh City for the 2016 National Disabled Sports Festival from July 10-14.
They are competing for 680 sets of medals in seven event categories including track and field, weightlifting, swimming, chess, table tennis, badminton and boccia.
The junior competition is integrated into the national tournament for the first time ever, with young disabled athletes competing in three events including track and field, swimming and chess.
On the first day of the tournament, Dong Nai province with 14 athletes in attendance won 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medals in weightlifting and swimming events.
The annual tournament provides a good opportunity to select outstanding athletes for the Vietnamese disabled sports team in preparation for Paralympic Rio, Brazil-2016 and the Asian Youth Para Games next year.
