Vietnamese players entered the match comfortably as they needed just a draw to secure a place in the knock-out round.
However, the first scoring opportunities went to Myanmar, Zin Phyo firing a strike off post seconds into the match and a cunning free-kick two minutes later that forced goalkeeper Thanh Tuan to work hard for the block.
After minutes of lagging behind, Vietnam reclaimed control of the match and poured constant attacks on the Myanmar side.
It was not until the 41st minute that the deadlock was broken in Vietnam’s favour, with Duy Khanh taking a nice pass from Tan Tai before easily beating Myanmar goalie Thitsar Min in a face-to-face situation.
The late first-half goal gave a strong boost to Vietnam’s confidence in the second part. After missing two concrete opportunities to double Vietnam’s advantage in the 55th and 65th minute, Duc Chinh managed to score with a few minutes to go, sealing an overall 2-0 win for Vietnam.
With ten points after four matches, Vietnam topped Group B and will face Group A’s runners-up Laos in the semifinals scheduled tomorrow, while Group B’s runners-up Malaysia will set up a semifinal clash with Group A leaders, Thailand on the same day.
