Vietnam finishes second at regional weightlifting championships

Vietnam ended up in second place overall at the 1st Southeast Asian Weightlifting Championships in Ayutthaya, Thailand, taking in a collection of three gold, seven silver and one bronze medal.

 The event, which ran from June 26 to 28, saw competition from nearly 60 lifters representing eight countries in Southeast Asia, with Vietnam sending 13 athletes - six competing in the women’s events and seven contending on the men’s side.

Vietnam’s gold medals were won by Tran Le Quoc Toan in the men’s 56kg (273kg in total lift), Nguyen Ngoc Trung in the men’s 62kg (281kg in total lift) and Le Thi Tham in the women’s 69kg (215kg in total lift).

The silver medallists included Thach Kim Tuan (men’s 56kg), Nguyen Thi Thuy (women’s 53kg), Nguyen Minh Quang and Tran Van Hoa (men’s 94kg), Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai (women’s 63kg), Lam Thi Bich (women’s 58kg) and Nguyen Hong Ngoc (men’s 77kg).

The sole bronze medal was secured by Pham Hong Thuy in the women’s 69kg category.

Despite finishing second in the men’s 94kg, Nguyen Minh Quang impressed the coaching staff as he broke three national records with 156kg, 188kg and 344kg in snatch, clean and jerk and total lifts respectively.

Thailand took top spot in the overall standings with nine gold, two silver and one bronze medal, while the third-place finish went to the Philippines with one gold and one bronze medal.

After the tournament, the Vietnam weightlifting team will continue training in preparation for the Asian championships in Thailand this September and the world championships in the US two months later, looking to secure direct tickets to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
