Nhat had a successful day of competition, ranking first in the preliminary round and making it through to the quarterfinals where he addressed Indonesian challenger, Muhammad Haerullah with a score of 15-8.
In the semifinals later, Nhat broke no sweat to beat Singaporean Lee Mun Hou Samson 15-9 to settle for the decisive clash against Lee’s compatriot Lim Wei Wen.
It was the first gold medal for Vietnam at the 28th SEA Games and also Nhat’s first gold at a SEA Games competition.
Inspired by Nhat’s success, another fencer Vu Thanh An also fought to beat Choy Yu Yong of Singapore 15-11 in the men’s individual sabre event a few minutes later to secure the second gold medal for Vietnam.
Vietnam also won an additional two bronze medals on Wednesday competition thanks to fencer Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu in the women’s individual foil event and table tennis duo Dinh Quang Linh and Mai Hoang My Trang in the mixed doubles category.
As of 10pm today, Vietnam stood at second place in the SEA Games standings with two gold and three bronze medals. Singapore temporarily led the podium with five golds, three silvers and three bronzes, while Thailand came third with two silvers and four bronzes.
