Being in the top 16 teams in Asia, Vietnam has an advantage in the group-stage draw for the second round of the Asian World Cup 2018 campaign.

Vietnam now ranks 14th in Asia, overtaking the Philippines, who dropped to 139th place, to assume first place in Southeast Asia. Thailand was third in the region and 142nd globally.

Globally, Germany maintained its top position, followed by Argentina and Belgium.

The advantage on the FIFA rankings in April ahead of the group-stage draw for 2018 World Cup Asian qualifiers places Vietnam in the second seed group, which likely helps the team avoid a lot of strong opponents in this group, such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, and Syria.

Chances to win second place in the group and progress to the third World Cup qualifying round are very bright for Vietnam as the team may play weaker rivals among 24 teams in the three groups behind.
