Cong won a gold medal in the 49kg event after lifting 181.5kg in the clean and jerk category, 1.5 kg more than the Asian record set by himself and 0.5kg more than the previous world record set by weightlifter Yakubu from Nigeria.
Previously in the morning, swimmer Trinh Thi Bich Nhu secured a silver medal, the first medal for the Vietnamese team at the Games after coming second in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB5 event. China’s Song Lingling won the gold medal, while Yuri Kitamura of Japan won a bronze.
The 2nd Asian Para Games are taking place from October 18-24 with the participation of 4,500 athletes from 41 countries.
A team of 45 Vietnamese athletes will compete in six out of 23 categories: track-and-field, swimming, weightlifting, badminton, table tennis and bowling. The athletes hope to win 6-9 gold medals and rank 15th in the medals table.
