Vietnam tops 7th ASEAN Para Games in first day

Vietnam topped the medal tally after the first competition day of the ongoing seventh ASEAN Para Games in Myanmar with 11 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals.

Vietnam topped the medal tally after the first competition day of the ongoing seventh ASEAN Para Games in Myanmar with 11 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals. 

The country’s swimmers had a successful day when bringing home six golds, seven silvers and seven bronzes. 

Swimmer Vo Huynh Anh Khoa made a new ASEAN Para Games record at the 400m freestyle event with a time of 4’57”65. Meanwhile, his teammates, Thanh Hai and Thanh Trung, broke Asian records at the 50m breaststroke event. 

With the results, Vietnam is expected to surpass the target of 15 gold medals in swimming as there are still three more days to go at the competition. 

In athletics, Vietnamese representatives won four gold medals. 

Meanwhile, duo Thu Van and Hoa Phuong outplayed their Malaysian counterparts to gain a gold medal in table tennis. 

Nearly 2,000 athletes and officials from the 10 ASEAN members and Timor Leste are attending the week-long Games, which is held every two years. 

The athletes are competing in 12 sports for a total of 399 gold medals.
