The country aims to make the podium’s top three, winning 65-70 gold medals in six registered sports namely track and field, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, chess and boocia (a sport for athletes with disabilities that have a major impact on motor skills).

The week-long tournament expects to see hundreds of disabled contestants representing 11 Southeast Asian countries competing for medals in a total of 12 sporting events.

At the previous games, held in Indonesia three years ago, the Vietnam sports contingent ranked fourth overall with 160 medals, including 44 golds, 44 silvers and 72 bronzes.

A send-off ceremony is scheduled to be held in Ho Chi Minh City on January 11 to motivate the Vietnamese athletes before they fly to Myanmar for this year’s Para Games.
