Authorities in Dong Nai province are in the process of compiling a dossier to seek UNESCO’s recognition of Cat Tien National Park as world natural heritage site.
Cat Tien National Park has a rich flora, along with 1,572 species of animals. The provincial government held a meeting in early January with a working group that is responsible for the compilation of the dossier in order to hasten the process.
In 2006, a dossier was sent to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) but this wan did not meet all the requirements.
The park’s management board has since gathered further related documents to add to the dossier.
The board has proposed that the provincial government make revisions as well as translate and create an alternative English version before submission to the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO.
The final dossier is expected to be sent to UNESCO this month.
Covering nearly 72,000 hectares of lowland forest and swampland, in three provinces of Dong Nai, Lam Dong and Binh Phuoc, Cat Tien National Park is now one of the six world biosphere reserves in Vietnam, and one of four nominations as a world natural heritage site.
The park has a rich flora, with 1,610 species in 162 botanical families, 1,572 species of animals, including 105 listed mammal species, 351 species of birds, 120 reptile and amphibian species and 30 species of freshwater fish. The park has recorded at least 460 species of butterflies and numerous other insects.
