Vietnam will host the 2019 Asian Games (Asiad) after its capital city of Hanoi outrun the biggest rival Indonesia's Surabaya in the race to win the bid to host the region’s largest sporting event, the Olympic Council of Asia General Assembly announced Thursday in Macau.
Hanoi will stage Asiad while Indonesia's second-largest city Surabaya will host the 2021 Asian Youth Games, the assembly said.
Dubai, the remaining opponent in the three-horse race for the bid, withdrew from the race, Aroundtherings website reported.
Hoang Vinh Giang, deputy chairman of the Olympic Council of Vietnam, confirmed the victory with newswire VnExpress.
This will be the first time Vietnam hosts such a large multisport event, after its successful organizing of the SEA Games 22, and the 2009 Asian Indoor Games.
The plan to host the Asiad in Vietnam, however, has become a controversial topic as it is expected to cost the country some US$150 million while the economy is still facing turbulence.
