The national karate team won five gold, seven silver and 12 bronze medals to end up in fourth place at the Southeast Asian Karate Championships, which concluded in Bangkok, Thailand, on September 30.

Malaysia was the overall winner of the tournament, earning nine gold, four silver and three bronze medals. It was followed by Indonesia in second place with eight golds, nine silvers and 12 bronzes, and host Thailand in third with seven golds, eight silvers and 16 bronzes.

Vietnam was not able to compete in the women’s team event, which is considered its big advantage, because some key athletes, including Nguyen Hoang Ngan, were suffering from injuries.

The Vietnamese athletes are now preparing for the world championships that will take place in Istanbul, Turkey, this November.
