At the opening ceremony, Vietnam’s top weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan received third-class Labour Order for his outstanding record at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
There are 45 sets of medals to grab in eight weight categories for men and seven weight categories for women.
The event aims to select the best athletes for the national weightlifting team to compete at the upcoming 26th SEA Games in Indonesia.
They will be sent to Bulgaria and China for training courses before taking part in the largest sporting event of the region.
