Previously, in Notice No. 416/TB-VPCP dated August 12, 2025, concluding the Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's inspection of the progress of Long Thanh Airport Project Phase 1, the Prime Minister assigned the Ministry of Construction and ACV to research and propose the implementation of the third runway, reporting to the Prime Minister in August 2025.
According to Decision No. 1777/QD-TTg dated November 11, 2020, issued by the Prime Minister approving the investment project for Phase 1 of Long Thanh Airport, the project will involve the construction of one runway, one passenger terminal, and fully integrated auxiliary facilities, with a designed capacity of 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo per year.
At the end of March 2025, the Prime Minister issued a decision approving adjustments to Phase 1 of the Long Thanh Airport project. Notably, the adjustment includes the addition of a second runway within Phase 1 of the project.
According to ACV, package No. 4.6, covering the construction of the first runway, taxiways, and aircraft parking apron, has basically completed the runway component. On April 26, 2025, the lighting system for the first runway was officially switched on and successfully passed trial operation, three months ahead of the contractual schedule. The remaining work in areas awaiting ground settlement and those intersecting with the underground infrastructure package is currently underway at the cargo terminal apron.
Meanwhile, package No. 4.12, construction of the second runway at Long Thanh Airport (Phase 1), officially broke ground at the end of May 2025. Currently, the contractor consortium is mobilizing more than 283 engineers and workers, along with 127 vehicles and pieces of equipment for construction. ACV has instructed the consortium to make full use of favorable weather conditions to accelerate progress.
The target for this package is to fundamentally complete runway construction by December 19, 2025. The remaining components are expected to be completed by February 2026, ensuring synchronization with the passenger terminal building so that it can be put into operation by June 2026 as scheduled.
