Dong Nai, a key industrial province in southern Vietnam, is positioning itself as a pioneer in integrating digital transformation with green development as part of its broader push for sustainable economic growth.
With its strategic location near Ho Chi Minh City and a well-developed infrastructure base, Dong Nai is leveraging its strengths to attract investment and promote environmentally responsible industrialization. As part of its green ambitions, the province has set clear goals toward building smart industrial zones, embracing circular economy models, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

In 2023, Dong Nai ranked third nationwide and topped the Southeast region in the Provincial Green Index (PGI) compiled by VCCI and USAID—affirming its progress in green governance and sustainable practices.
At a recent event marking National Digital Transformation Day, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Son Hung emphasized that Dong Nai has long prioritized selective and high-tech industrial investment. He stressed the importance of combining green production and consumption with innovation, digital technology, and scientific advancement.
Experts point out that merging digital and green transformations is now essential for long-term competitiveness. Dr. Tran Quy, Director of the Vietnam Institute for Digital Economic Development (VIDE), noted that digital solutions in industry can reduce operational costs by 10–15% and boost productivity by 20–30%. He added that Dong Nai’s industrial base gives it a unique advantage to lead in smart and green manufacturing.
To translate these ambitions into results, local leaders and businesses must deepen collaboration across what Quy calls the "five-house model"—government, academia, businesses, producers, and banks. Strengthening this ecosystem is key to driving innovation, technology transfer, and sustainable production models.
However, challenges remain. Many firms remain hesitant to invest in green technologies due to high upfront costs and a lack of clarity around ESG compliance. Experts argue that this mindset must shift, as ESG not only aligns with global standards but also reduces long-term risks and improves market access.
The province is currently running a series of events under the theme “Digital Transformation – Green Transition,” with activities held across various districts to promote awareness and action.
Ultimately, Dong Nai's path forward hinges on integrating ESG principles into management systems, building digital capacity within firms, and fostering a culture of sustainability at all levels—from policy to the production floor.
