Among them, the Phu Son Agricultural Services Cooperative in Phu Son manages approximately 480 hectares of durian, of which 350 hectares have been granted export growing area codes to China – the largest certified area in the province.
The main variety grown is Dona durian, a specialty of Dong Nai that has been recognized as a national variety and is registered for intellectual property rights in Vietnam and several other countries. Dona durians are known for their superior quality, unique aroma, thick and dry flesh, and excellent shelf life of up to 10 days under cool storage. The buying price for Dona durians is currently about VND 20,000/kg higher than the Ri6 variety.
Thinh Bach Import-Export Co., Ltd, one of the country’s major durian exporters, is actively working to source high-quality Dona durians from Dong Nai for international markets.
According to Director Tran Van Son of Phu Son cooperative, the durians here are cultivated following VietGAP standards; the cooperative is building a value chain from production to consumption. However, a current challenge is the lack of qualified packaging facilities in the area, forcing farmers to rely heavily on traders. This dependence often results in premature or delayed harvests, directly affecting the quality and profits of farmers.
Nguyen Huu Phuc, Chairman of the Tan Phu district Farmers’ Association, stated that the district is rapidly expanding the Dona durian area and is calling for long-term investment from export enterprises. The goal is to establish stable partnerships with farmers and develop a sustainable durian value chain.
