Dong Nai targets 6,000 ha of coffee by 2030

(ĐN)- Dong Nai is targeting an expansion of its coffee cultivation area to 6,000 hectares by 2030, up around 700 hectares from the current figure. The goal is to achieve an average yield of 2.5 tons per hectare, with a strong focus on eco-friendly, organic farming to meet both domestic and international market standards.

Historically, coffee was a familiar crop to local farmers, with the province once cultivating over 10,000 hectares and achieving yields of 5–6 tons per hectare using grafted coffee techniques. However, prolonged periods of plummeting coffee prices led many farmers to abandon the crop in favor of more profitable options like durian or pepper, causing a decline in both area and yield.

Although coffee was designated as a key crop nearly 20 years ago, efforts to build integrated value chains in production and processing have fallen short. Experts believe that if the “five-house” linkage model (farmers – businesses – government – scientists – banks) had been successfully implemented, Dong Nai could have established a sustainable coffee-growing region.

At current prices of VND 125,000–130,000 per kg and yields of 5–6 tons per hectare, farmers can earn VND 500–600 million per hectare annually. Nonetheless, agricultural experts advise farmers to prioritize quality and sustainable practices rather than chasing short-term high-priced crops — with durian being a cautionary example of market-driven planting trends.
