(ĐN)- In 2024, Dong Nai saw a significant increase in banana exports, bringing good profits to farmers. For the 2025 season, the province continues to expand its banana tissue culture plantations, benefiting from favorable weather conditions that enhance both yield and quality.
Farmers in banana-growing areas are currently harvesting the new season’s crop. Unusual but beneficial off-season rains have boosted banana growth, while cooler weather at the end of the year has reduced pests, improving fruit quality. Many farmers are adopting high-tech farming methods, such as using drones for pesticide application and direct partnerships with suppliers to cut costs.
Despite higher yields and improved quality, market uncertainties remain a concern. While some farmers, like Nguyen Ba Thuong, have seen prices drop slightly compared to earlier in the season, prices remain higher than last year, keeping profits stable.
Dong Nai had a successful 2024, exporting nearly 292,000 tons of fresh bananas and earning about $117 million. With banana cultivation expanding rapidly—reaching nearly 17,000 hectares—exporters face increasing competition and logistical challenges. Rising transportation costs, container shortages, and longer shipping times threaten fruit quality and profitability.
Ly Minh Hung, Director of Thanh Binh Cooperative, warns that Vietnam's previous advantage in winter banana exports is diminishing as other tropical countries increase production. To stay competitive, farmers must adopt year-round harvesting and meet stringent quality standards for high-end markets beyond China.
Tran Lam Sinh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, emphasizes shifting focus from expanding acreage to developing specialized high-quality production zones. The province also plans to strengthen supply chain partnerships, ensuring stable markets and sustainable growth for banana exports.
