The proposal was developed following a request made by the chair of the Dong Nai People’s Committee, Vo Tan Duc, to the Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, asking for permission to study the establishment of the zone to maximise the airport's potential and advantages.
Duc made the request at a meeting between the Government and local departments on implementing resolutions for economic growth on February 21.
The first location proposed is a 900-hectare service-commercial area southwest of the airport, spanning across Long Phuoc and Long An communes.
The second is a 200-hectare service-commercial area in Cam Duong Commune, northeast of the airport.
The third one is a 200-hectare site of a service-commercial area spanning across Long An and Binh Son communes, to the northwest.
The fourth option is a 100-hectare logistical centre in Tan Hiep and Bau Can communes, southeast of the airport.
The proposal was sent to the Dong Nai Department of Finance for review on Monday.
Previously, Dong Nai authorities had also worked with representatives from CT Strategies (CTS) – a consulting firm from the US – on establishing a free trade zone connected to Long Thanh Airport and Phuoc An Port.
According to experts, Dong Nai is positioned as a centre for aviation, high-tech industry, logistics, aviation support services and a key transport hub for the southern economic region in Viet Nam. With many industrial zones currently operating in the province, the establishment of a free trade zone will help boost the local and regional economy.
Eight key industries and services have been suggested for working from the zone, with the main goal being producing goods for export.
They include pharmaceutical and chemical production, car and aircraft parts, manufacturing and assembly, industrial and consumer electronics production and the development of semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT).
They also include high-quality agricultural exports, aircraft maintenance, e-commerce and express delivery services.
