Cam My leads organic agriculture development in Dong Nai

(ĐN)- Cam My District is emerging as a frontrunner in Dong Nai’s push for organic agriculture (OA), a key breakthrough in the province’s agricultural development strategy. Despite the stringent standards, complex production processes, and market access challenges, local authorities and farmers have made significant strides in expanding OA and organic-oriented farming.

The district has established certified organic production zones, including 2.5 hectares of pepper (Lâm San Agricultural Cooperative) and 3.3 hectares of durian (Group 1 Cooperative, Xuan Que commune). Moreover, a 17.8-hectare organic pepper area in Lam San commune, operated by 15 households, is undergoing certification under European standards.

Beyond certified farming, Cam My has also developed three key organic-oriented zones covering 380 hectares, including rice (50 ha), pepper (300 ha), and durian (30 ha). Smaller initiatives are underway in other communes, such as organic pomelo in Thua Duc and Suoi Luc.

However, local farmers face hurdles due to the lack of standardized technical guidelines and legal frameworks. Many have transitioned to organic methods since 2018 but often rely on self-learning due to the absence of official protocols. They now call for concrete support in establishing standardized procedures and scaling up specialized organic farming zones to meet export demands.

Cam My authorities have laid out strategic plans, including the district’s OA Development Plan through 2030. Yet, implementation remains challenging due to policy gaps. District leaders are urging provincial agencies to issue clear technical and economic norms to guide organic production, alongside tailored policies to support processing and market access.

Without a specific legal framework for OA, implementation remains fragmented. District leaders stress that decentralization and legal clarity are essential for effective and sustainable growth in this sector.
