(ĐN)- At the start of 2024, Dong Nai provincial government launched the Net Zero Carbon Emission Plan (2021-2030, vision to 2050), making it the first locality nationwide to do so. Nearly a year on, the plan is actively implemented by departments and localities, aligning with the province’s green growth and sustainable development strategy to combat climate change.

Currently, two of the three key components are underway: assessing greenhouse gas emissions and defining targets, solutions, and resource mobilization. Agencies have widely communicated the plan’s objectives to officials, citizens, and businesses, fostering awareness and engagement.

Significant efforts include evaluating industrial emissions, improving air quality management, and promoting green production technologies. For instance, Amata Industrial Park meets 87% of criteria under Vietnam’s Eco-Industrial Park Project, reflecting progress in eco-friendly industrial transformation.

Provincial leadership highlights two core approaches: reducing emissions and enhancing carbon absorption. Dong Nai prioritizes seven sectors for emission reduction and offsets emissions through forest protection, renewable energy development, and shifting to a green, circular economy model.

The Agriculture Department focuses on maintaining over 28% forest cover, increasing organic fertilizer use, and adopting high-tech irrigation. Plans are also underway to pilot carbon credit projects, leveraging Dong Nai’s abundant forests for commercial carbon trading to reinvest in sustainable forestry and balance industrial emissions.

Chairman Vo Tan Duc confirms more than half of the plan’s timeline has passed, with two-thirds of activities in progress. Authorities are finalizing governance structures and continuing inter-agency coordination to ensure effective implementation. Key tasks ahead include workforce training and promoting new green industrial zones.

In summary, Dong Nai’s net zero initiative is gaining momentum, reflecting a firm commitment to sustainable growth and climate resilience.
