Earlier, the Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee studied the 50-hectare zone out of the 967-hectare area of the airport in Bien Hoa City, which would accommodate up to five million passengers annually by 2030.

The project will be conducted within Bien Hoa Military Airport, initially constructed in 1955. The airport currently serves military aircraft featuring two concrete runways, each measuring over 3,000 metres long and 45 metres wide.

According to the master plan for developing the national airport system for the 2021-30 period, with a vision to 2050, Bien Hoa Airport will serve as both a civil and military airport between 2021 and 2030.

Bien Hoa Airport is approximately 28 km from Tan Son Nhat Airport in HCM City and 42 km from Long Thanh International Airport, under construction in Dong Nai.

Upon completion, Dong Nai will become the first locality in Vietnam to operate two commercial airports, the Long Thanh International Airport and the dual-use Bien Hoa Airport.
