According to the planning approved by the Prime Minister, Long Thanh aims to become one of the key urban areas in Southeast and dynamic development regions and the country’s gateway to the world thanks to the connection with Long Thanh airport.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha signed Decision No. 185/QD-TTg dated February 20, 2024 on approving the general task of planning Long Thanh urban area in Dong Nai Province until 2045, announced by Dong Nai Provincial People’s Committee on February 28.
Accordingly, the scope of general planning for Long Thanh urban area is the entire administrative boundary of Long Thanh District with a total natural area of 430.62 square kilometres.
It is forecast that the population of Long Thanh urban area will reach about 340,000 to 370,000 by 2030 and about 480,000 – 500,000 by 2045.
The planning of Long Thanh urban area is synchronous and consistent with national, Southeast region’s and Dong Nai province’s plannings.
Under the planning, natural conditions, typical ecosystems and advantages of Long Thanh International Airport and the national and regional technical infrastructure systems in the area will be effectively exploited to develop suitable urban area space and functional area towards increasing land use efficiency.
The planning’s goal is to make Long Thanh into one of the key urban areas in the Southeast and dynamic development regions and a nucleus to promote socio-economic development of Dong Nai Province. Long Thanh will reach the criteria of a class-two urban area by 2030 and will be recognised as a class-two urban area after 2030.
Long Thanh is an urban area associated with Long Thanh Airport, so it will become the country's gateway to the world. Long Thanh urban area will be a connection centre, traffic hub and multi-modal transport for the country. This is also an important area for security and defence of the Southeast region and the whole country.
Under the decision, Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee is responsible for allocating funds and approving the total cost estimate for establishing the general planning project for Long Thanh urban area.
The province is fully responsible for the order and procedures for Long Thanh urban area's general planning project until 2045 in terms of the accuracy of information, data, drawings, and documents.
The Ministry of Construction is responsible for the appraisal results of the general planning until 2045 and guiding Dong Nai province to organise and implement the planning.
