On those grounds, the Ministry of Transport recommended adding the two airports to the master plan for the development of the national airport system in the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.

In September 2022, the Government established a research team to assess the locations, infrastructure and other conditions related to the civil aviation exploitation of the Bien Hoa and Thanh Son military airports

Bien Hoa military airport is in the southern province of Dong Nai while Thanh Son military airport is in the south-central coastal province of Ninh Thuan.

The former has an area of nearly 970 hectares. The latter is much wider, covering around 2,200 hectares.

There are currently no civilian airports in Ninh Thuan or Dong Nai. The two airports, which were built before 1975, have only served the military.

Vietnam has 14 international and 14 domestic airports, according to the Ministry of Transport. The ministry proposed the country have 14 international and 17 domestic airports by 2050.
