Thus, Long Thanh airport will be constructed in five years between 2020 and 2025. This is the biggest project of the nation which will become the motivation for the country’s economic development.

Long Thanh International Airport’s master plan was approved by the Government in 2005. It  will be built in Long Thanh district, Dong Nai province as a 4F-category airport under the criteria of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and will be an important airport of Vietnam, with an orientation to be an important entry point to Indochina region in south-east Asia and surrounding ASEAN countries.

The PM has allowed the People’s Committee of Dong Nai province to develop and implement a resettlement project in tandem with a feasibility study on the airport conducted by the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV).

Centrally located in the heart of Southeast Asia, Long Thanh will be a regional airport connecting to Europe, the Middle East, Northeast Asia, North America and Oceania. According to some aviation experts, the should bring huge profits to the national economy. It fits perfectly into the industrialization and modernization of Dong Nai province and the key southern economic region.

Lai Xuan Thanh, President and CEO of the Vietnam Airlines Corporation, said Long Thanh airport is designed to meet the standards of the ICAO. It has been designed to accommodate 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of air cargo per year. It is expected to become a regional transit hub and create momentum for national economic growth. This will be a key national airport. Long Thanh international airport will be equipped with advanced technology to compete with other international airports in the region and the wider world.

Covering a total area of more than 5,580 hectares, Long Thanh International Airport will be located in six communes in Long Thanh district in Dong Nai province.

The construction of the airport costs VND336.63 trillion ($14.76 billion), and will be divided into three phases.

In the first phase, a runway and one passenger terminal, along with other supporting works, will be built to serve 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo each year. This phase is expected to be completed by 2025.

In the second phase, one more runway and another passenger terminal will be built to serve around 50 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo a year.

After the third phase, the airport will be able to serve 100 million passengers and 5 million tonnes of cargo a year.
