The National Assembly Standing Committee has approved to transform Dong Nai Province's Long Khanh Town into a city in order to make the ground clearance work for Long Thanh Airport project proceed more smoothly.

Five communes including Xuan Lap, Xuan Tan, Bao Vinh, Suoi Tre and Bau Sen will be upgraded into wards, under Long Khanh City. The administrative boundaries of Binh Son, Cam Duong, Long An, Long Phuoc and Bau Can communes will be adjusted while all of Suoi Trau Commune will be cleared for Long Thanh Airport project.

Minister of Internal Affairs Le Vinh Tan said at a NA meeting on April 10 that Long Khanh had seen fast and stable development in recent years with over 60% non-agricultural labour force. Long Thanh Airport project is a national project that will play an important role in Vietnam's socio-economic development.

The airport will cover 50 square kilometres in Binh Son, Cam Duong, Long An, Long Phuoc, Bau Can and Suoi Trau. Up to 4,854 households will be relocated for the project.

Regarding the newly-upgraded wards, the local authorities said that those wards had experienced rapid urbanisation and economic development as they are adjacent to the province's centre and had a convenient transportation system.

They have seen strong development in the local industry, trade, services and handicraft sectors while depending less on the agricultural sector.

Long Khanh is a key economic area in the south and located next to the strategic economic areas in the southeast, Central Highlands and southern regions.
