Prices of live pigs in Dong Nai Province have stayed high, hovering around VND47,000-48,000 a kilo, although some traders even chased up the price to VND50,000-52,000 to have full truck loads of pigs.

Prices of live pigs in Dong Nai Province have stayed high, hovering around VND47,000-48,000 a kilo, although some traders even chased up the price to VND50,000-52,000 to have full truck loads of pigs.

Nguyen Tri Cong, chairman of the Dong Nai Livestock Association, told the Daily that the high price of VND50,000-52,000 per kilo was abnormal, which could mislead farmers who might keep back their herds in anticipation of higher prices.

“Some traders who only buy a few more pigs (for full truck loads) to ship to provinces accept to pay VND50,000-52,000 instead of the current price of VND47,000-48,000, which may prompt farmers to wait for such a high price,” said Cong, adding the shortage of live pigs will be short-lived.

Dao Huu Thuan, a farmer who is raising 2,000 pigs in Thong Nhat District in Dong Nai Province, affirmed that live pigs normally sell for VND48,000 per kilo, but traders under certain circumstances are ready to pay VND50,000-52,000 per kilo. Despite the current high price, many farmers still expect it to go higher so they are holding on to their herds, said Thuan.

A source from Hoc Mon Wholesale Market in HCMC said pig prices have inched up in recent days, at VND48,000 per kilo for grade-one pigs, up VND4,000 against ten days ago. The number of live pigs transported to the market has dropped from 5,000-5,500 to 4,900 or particularly 4,576 pigs on May 28.

The source noted prices of pork have recently risen too.

Nguyen Ngoc An, general director of meat processing firm Vissan, said his company has been trying to keep prices unchanged, but given the increasing price of live pigs, the company may reconsider its retail prices.

“Vissan will adjust up prices of pork if live pig prices keep soaring,” he said.
