Vinacas Chairman Nguyen Duc Thanh said that cashew production entered major crop in Viet Nam. However, due to climate change and disease impacts, output dropped by up to 80% in some provinces like Lam Dong and Binh Thuan. In key cashew provinces, including Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, and Ba Ria-Vung Tau, productivity remained stable, therefore, total raw materials of cashew would not drop sharply in comparison with last year.
Vinacas reported that global cashew nut output was 3 million tons on average every year. In 2016, Viet Nam produced 1.5 million tons of cashew nuts, making up around a half of the global output, from which it shipped 348,00 tons of cashews abroad and pocketed US$ 2.84 billion.
In the first two months of 2017, overseas shipment brought back US$255 million in revenue, down 3.3% against the same period last year.
Experts attributed the drop to changing weather that results in the spread of pestilent insects on cashew trees.
This year, businesses are encouraged to adopt clean production and expand domestic and foreign markets, towards optimizing cashew trade value. The Association will also devise a scheme on using advanced processing technology to improve competitiveness of the product./.
