US Poultry and Egg Export Council president Jim Sumner denied allegations by farmers in Dong Nai Province that the US was dumping cheap chicken legs in the Vietnam market.
Sumner said two-thirds of US leg quarters are consumed in the US and the rest is exported to 125 countries, including Vietnam.
He said US chicken parts are sold in Vietnam at the same or higher prices than in the US.
Sumner said the complaints are aimed at frozen products, but these do not have direct competition with live chickens, which are preferred in Vietnam. Moreover, the US poultry industry has no interest in competing directly with domestic producers.
He said that all products have been checked for quality and food hygiene.
Poultry farmers in the southeast and Dong Nai Province have said they are considering suing the US for dumping cheap chicken legs in the Vietnamese market. They say a kilo of chicken legs costs VND80,000 in the US, while the price is VND20,000 in Vietnam. A chicken is sold at VND200,000 in US, but VND60,000 in Vietnam.
Nguyen Tri Cong, the chairman of Dong Nai Livestock Association, raised concerns about sick chickens or outdated meat being exported to Vietnam.
