Hung said the Ministry would try to start the construction in 2019, to complete the project in 2012 and to put the airport into operation in 2023.
Earlier, Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang also told the media that it may take two or three years to conduct feasibility study report and preparations for the construction of the airport.
The feasibility study report for each construction stage will be submitted to the National Assembly for consideration. The selection of organizations in charge of making feasibility study report will be done through international bidding, Thang said.
The latest session of the National Assembly, which ended late June, adopted the Resolution on Long Thanh International Airport project. The Ministry of Transport has proposed the Prime Minister to assign ACV as investor of this huge project.
According to Minister Thang, during his visit to Japan early this week, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung introduced this project to the Japanese government and businesses.
It is reported that the Japanese side was very interested in the Long Thanh Airport and the high-speed railway project in Vietnam.
The category 4F airport is expected to serve as an aviation hub in both the country and the Southeast Asian region. Covering an area of 5,000ha, the airport, located in Dong Nai province, will handle 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo by 2050.
By 2025, the first phase of the airport, consisting of the construction of a runway and a passenger terminal capable of serving 25 million passengers a year, may be put into use.
The project has total investment of US$16.03 billion sourced from State budget, official development assistance, and public-private partnership among others.
The airport is expected to reduce the load on Ho Chi Minh's Tan Son Nhat airport.
