Finance Minister Dinh Tien Dung has asked some localities to create all favourable conditions for insurance companies to assess damage suffered by enterprises during recent social disorder.

In his dispatch to authorities of Ho Chi Minh City, central Ha Tinh province and southern Binh Duong and Dong Nai provinces, the Minister requested the localities to team up with insurance firms to verify real loss of the affected businesses and quicken up payment for the damage.

Director of the ministry’s Insurance Supervisory Authority Phung Ngoc Khanh estimated that insurance companies may pay 2 trillion VND (94 million USD) for the damage.

Insurance firms were asked to advance damages for the enterprises once the real loss is confirmed by the local departments of finance and managing boards of industrial and export processing zones. This aims at supporting the affected enterprises to restore quickly their production.

The disturbances erupted during workers’ rallies in protest of China’s illegal placement of its oil rig Haiyang Shiyou – 981 in Vietnam’s continental shelf and exclusive economic zone from early May.

Some extremists incited others to destroy property of foreign firms as well as of the State, businesses and individuals, and acted against law enforcement officials, disrupting social order and business activities. Thanks to the government’s timely interference, most affected companies have returned to work and social order and security has been restored.
