Bo Ngoc Thu, Director of the Department, said that the move to close the pits, which sit on a 140 hectare site, was due to environmental impact and the safety of local people.
“The province has not approved any investor to develop these stone-pits into residential areas but many potential investors have come to express a desire to change the area into a huge complex of eco-towns and tourism site,” she said.
According to the province’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the pits have left several large holes with depths of between 60 and 80 meters in each hole. The deep holes have resulted in fatalities in the area with numerous local people drowning in recent years.
