Up to 40 families in Dong Nai Province have filed complaints to a grassroots Farmers Union demanding compensation from Sonadezi for discharging substandard wastewater that damages their seafood farming and fruit growing areas.
Local residents asked Sonadezi to pay compensation for polluting the Dong Nai River over several years, which has ruined fruit orchards and seafood farming areas, said Le Van Mai, Vice Chair of Tam An Commune’s Farmers Union,.
Previously, environmental police caught red-handed Sonadezi in Long Thanh District discharging industrial wastewater exceeding the permitted standards into the Dong Nai River.
The Department of Environmental Crime Control (C49) under the Ministry of Public Security along with provincial authorities will collect more evidences of illegal wastewater discharge by Sonadezi before deciding punishment in the coming time.
The wastewater treatment system of Sonadezi in Long Thanh Industrial Zone treats some 9,300 cubic meters of industrial wastewater from 40 factories per day. Most factories are operating in the sectors of textiles, dyeing and chemical production, according to Dong Nai Department of Natural Resource and Environment.
Chief Inspector of Dong Nai Department of Natural Resources and Environment Hoang Van Thong said that since 2009 up to now, this company had been fined four times, totaling VND 440 million for pollution.
Automatic observatories installed at three firms to control wastewater
In related news, Dong Nai’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment has just installed automatic observatories to monitor industrial wastewater at three factories in the province.
The system was fixed up at Ajinomoto Vietnam Co., Ltd., Hung Nghiep Formosa Co., Ltd, and Vedan Co., Ltd., as they discharge a large amount of industrial water daily.
Data collected from the observatories will be automatically transferred to Dong Nai-based Center for Environmental Monitoring for supervision and processing.
Chief Environment Inspector Hoang Van Thong said that between now and the year’s end, all 13 Dong Nai-based industrial zones would be equipped with the automatic observatories to bring industrial untreated water in the province under control.
