(ĐN)- Vinh Cuu district’s Agricultural Expansion Encouragement Centre said the Centre has paid 40 per cent of the cost of rice seed and 20 per cent of the cost of input materials and provided farming technique for nearly 10 farmer households in the district who were selected to cultivate new variety of rice called OM 5472 in the winter-spring crop. These farmers have achieved a rice yield of 5.6 to 6.5 tonnes per hectare, a further increase of 1.1 to 2 tonnes compared to others who cultivated ordinary rice varieties. Unhusked rice prices in Dong Nai province stay between VND 6,500 and VND 6,600 per kilo. With the current prices, farmers can get a net profit of VND 25-30 million from each hectare of new rice variety after the production cost is deducted.
The OM5472 shows high disease resistance and yield as well. Vinh Cuu district’s Agricultural Expansion Encouragement Centre is attempting to encourage local farmers to cultivate OM5472 for the summer-autumn crop.
