* Challenges facing Thong Nhat district

Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee Tran Dinh Thanh said in his working visit to Thong Nhat district that the district basically implemented the targets of socio-economic development, especially it focused on developing agricultural production and breeding. However, Thong Nhat is still a primarily agricultural district with nearly 86 percent of agricultural land; the poor household rate of the district now is over 7%. Therefore, Thong Nhat district’s government and people must make further efforts to improve their people’s material and spiritual lives and reduce the rate of poor household. In 2007, the district reached GDP growth rate of 9.7 percent.

* What are ways to escape poverty ?

Thong Nhat district is facing heady challenges from the primarily agricultural district and the economic backward area. Thus, it takes a long time for the district to overcome the difficulties and challenges and the district must develop strategy that will help it to escape poverty. Following this, Thong Nhat district’s efforts have been focused on socio-economic development during the past years with the aim of improving socio-economic status of the district and creating an impetus for poverty reduction through socio-economic development plans. In 2005, Thong Nhat district was the first in Dong Nai province in which its overall socio-economic development plans was approved and accepted by the chairman of the provincial People’s Committee. The district has numerous advantages in poultry and pig breeding sector. The district produces over 200,000 pigs per year and its output ranked the second in the country. Thong Nhat has developed effective breeding plans for the various classes of farm livestock. Until now, the district has established cattle breeding farms with an area of 2,340 hectares. According to assessments from the Planning Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Thong Nhat is the first in the country in which has planned to build breeding farms.

Not only promoting agricultural development, Thong Nhat district also made efforts to develop industrial projects. Presently, Thong Nhat is home to Dau Giay industrial park with an area of 330 ha; Communal Road 25 IP (300 ha) invested by Donataba; Quang Trung, Soc Lu and Hung Loc industrial complexes. Besides, the district has planned to build residential complexes with a total area of more than 300 hectares in Dau Giay town, Quang Trung, Hung Loc and Bau Ham 2 communes. To implement the projects of urban development for the period of 2010-2015, Thong Nhat focused on developing traffic infrastructure and power system in order to meet demands in the new period.

There will be many difficults ahead but with substantial and effective solutions Thong Nhat district’s government and people can look forward with confidence and optimism that Thong Nhat will continue to grow in coming years.
