At 3:58 p.m., flight VN5001, operated with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, landed on Runway No. 1 at Long Thanh Airport. This occasion marked the first civil aviation flight to touch down at Long Thanh Airport and holds significant importance for the final assessment of operational conditions in preparation for the official flight scheduled to land on December 19, 2025.

After landing, the aircraft taxied slowly along the runway and then moved to the apron area of Long Thanh Airport. There, the Boeing 787 was greeted with a ceremonial water cannon salute from two water cannons to welcome the first successful landing at the airport. The aircraft was subsequently towed by specialized vehicles to its parking position to carry out procedures similar to those of a commercial flight.

The technical flight was operated by Vietnam Airlines, Vietnam's national flag carrier. The aircraft carried only the flight crew and technical staff, with no passengers or cargo on board. At around 6:00 p.m. the same day, flight VN5002, also operated with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, successfully took off from Long Thanh Airport.

According to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the first successful landing and takeoff at Long Thanh Airport marks a significant milestone in the comprehensive assessment of technical infrastructure, service procedures, and coordination capacity among units at Vietnam’s largest airport.

Before receiving the technical flight on December 15, 2025, ACV coordinated with Vietnam Airlines and the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) to inspect various aspects, including the runway, apron, navigation systems, passenger terminal, ground handling processes, technical operations, airport operations management, and air traffic control. This occasion is considered the final confirmation of Long Thanh Airport’s readiness before welcoming its first passenger flight from Noi Bai Airport, scheduled for December 19, 2025.

ACV also stated that the successful landing of the technical flight using Vietnam’s largest aircraft, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, served as a real-world evaluation of the airport’s operational capability, marking a significant milestone in the timeline of this national key mega-project. This success lays a solid foundation for the airport’s full-scale development across three phases, with a designed capacity of 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo per year. The success of the flight, accompanied by continued efforts to put the project into commercial operation soon, will be a critical driving force contributing to the goal of enhancing Vietnam’s aviation position in the region and globally.

Long Thanh Airport is a national key project, envisioned as a modern aviation gateway and one of Vietnam’s future transit hubs, designed to meet the rapidly growing demands of the aviation sector and international trade.
