This is Vietnam’s first power project complex to use imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel, carrying pioneering significance in the roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to realize the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

The Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 power plant project is invested by PV Power, with a total investment of approximately 1.4 billion USD. The project plays a trailblazing role for the future LNG-to-power project chain of the Vietnam National Industry – Energy Group (Petrovietnam), contributing to the formation of a modern LNG power hub, enhancing electricity supply capacity, and ensuring national energy security in the context of a strong transition toward clean energy.

With a total capacity of more than 1.6 thousand MW, this plant complex is expected to supply over 9 billion kWh per year once operating stably, adding an important baseload power source to the national power system, especially for the southern region. It also serves as a flexible power source, supporting grid management and balancing as demand for renewable energy continues to rise.

Construction started on the Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 power plant complex on May 15, 2022. Throughout the construction process, more than 3.2 thousand managers, engineers, and workers from the investor, the EPC contractor, and 138 subcontractors participated; about 40 thousand tons of steel structures and equipment and 120 thousand cubic meters of concrete were constructed and installed, with a total of 10 million labor hours.

The Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 power plants belong to a project with multiple national firsts. It is the first project in Vietnam to use LNG fuel. It is the gas-fired thermal power project with the largest capacity and the largest power generation units in Vietnam to date. The project features world-leading equipment and technology, using 9HA.02 gas turbines, with the highest technology level, capacity and efficiency in the world today, and the capability to co-fire hydrogen. The project has the highest efficiency in Vietnam at present. It is the first single-shaft project in Vietnam with a configuration in which the gas turbine, steam turbine and generator are connected on a common shaft. It is also a project arranged without Government guarantees, with a loan value of nearly USD 1 billion…
