Hanoi - Dong Nai Eye Hospital (Tam Hiep ward, Dong Nai province) recently successfully performed surgery, restoring eyesight to a patient with cataracts and diabetic retinopathy.
The patient is P.T.C., 75, from Tam Hiep ward. Before coming to the hospital, C.'s eyes were blurred, making her unable to see clearly. The limited vision forced her to rely on relatives’ assistance for even simple tasks such as eating.
Specialist level 1 doctor Hoang Vinh Ha, Professional Director of Hanoi - Dong Nai Eye Hospital, said: C's right eye has diabetic retinopathy in the proliferative stage, the disease has become more severe with the formation of new blood vessels, bleeding inside the eye and retina, vitreous, and severe macular edema. The patient's left eye also has scattered hemorrhages in the retina.
The doctor decided to perform cataract surgery for the patient. After the surgery, C.'s left eye could see clearly, and her vision improved to 8/10. Her right eye, which had severe diabetic retinopathy, the doctor chose to inject intraocular proliferative. A few days after the surgery, the patient's right eye vision improved to 3/10.
According to Dr. Ha, surgical intervention is more difficult if the patient comes for examination and surgery later, because serious complications such as vitreous hemorrhage and retinal detachment can be occur.
