On the bustling April 30 Street (Tran Bien Ward, Dong Nai Province), there lies a place where time seems to stand still. That is the Bien Hoa Citadel, (also known as Thanh Ken), an architectural work with strong historical significance. This relic, once a solid fortress under the Nguyen Dynasty, was later rebuilt by the French into a more fortified structure. Today, most of the stories and important remnants of the citadel remain hidden behind its gates, making the site a living, yet quiet "museum" in the heart of the city.

The most prominent feature of the Bien Hoa Citadel is its two French-style villas, which now have dark red tiled roofs covered in moss over time. The architecture here is a delicate blend of Oriental and French colonial styles, reflected in the large arched windows and harmoniously designed vaults. Stepping inside, visitors are greeted by long corridors lined with pillars and vintage lanterns, evoking a nostalgic feeling that seems to take them back in time.

In 2013, the site was recognised as a national historical relic by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Currently, the provincial Department of Construction is developing a plan to create a square around Bien Hoa Citadel, allowing the public to access the historical monument more easily and gain a deeper understanding of its history, culture, and values.

Awakening the potential of the citadel not only contributes to preserving a unique architectural work but also serves as a means of educating and igniting the pride in local history. It acts as a “bridge” connecting the past and the present, contributing to enriching the cultural and spiritual life of the Dong Nai people.
