The submarine cable Asia –America Gateway (AAG) that provides international internet connectivity for Vietnam was fixed successfully on January 23 after 17 days of breakdown.

The cable was found cut on January 5 at a site 117 km off the Vung Tau station, reducing internet traffic by 40 percent and affecting all Vietnamese internet providers, including VNPT, Viettel, FPT and SPT.

Internet connectivity in Vietnam is provided by four marine cables but the 20,000km AAG has the largest capacity, at two terabytes per second.

The cable system, put into operation in November 2009, connects South-East Asia with the US mainland across the Pacific Ocean via Guam and Hawaii.

In 2014 and January 2015, it was broken five times.
