A supermoon will be visible in Vietnam this Sunday when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth along its elliptical orbit.
Dang Tuan Duy, chairman of Ho Chi Minh City Amateur Astronomy Club, was quoted by VnExpress as saying the supermoon will be seen at 6:34 p.m. (Vietnam standard time) on June 23.
“The moon at perigee [the point at which the Moon is closest in its orbit to the Earth] is 12-14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than a normal full moon,” he said.
Experts said this full moon will not be only the closest and largest full moon of the year, but will be the moon’s closest encounter with Earth for all of 2013.
The moon will not be as close again until August 2014.
