Figures from the Ministry of Information and Communications' Viet Nam Internet Information Centre (VNNIC) showed that in the first eight months of the year, more than 51,000 new ".vn" domain names were registered, bringing the country's total to more than 160,000.

A circular outlining the domain name registration fee promulgated by the Finance Ministry at the beginning of the year offered a 20 to 98 per cent fee reduction for businesses and organisations depending on the type of domain name requested.

Head of the FPT International Telecommunication Joint Stock Company's Online Data Department Vu Thi Huyen said new domain name registrations had risen 25 per cent since the circular became effective.

She added that the domain names with ".com.vn" and ".vn" saw the highest growth at her company because most of their clients were businesses.

The fee reduction has given customers more domain name choices and helped businesses register their web addresses for several years rather than just one year because they were more affordable, she said.

"The policy also increased the number of domain names in the country, contributing to internet development and e-commerce," she said.

A representative from the VDC Online said their number of new domain registries in the first two quarters of this year increased by nearly 2,000, representing a 21 per cent increase over the second half of last year.

He said customers were supportive of the policy because it would help reduce operational costs.

"Vietnamese brand names will be further advertised in the world market through commercial internet activities," he added.

VNNIC's deputy director Tran Minh Tan said that the number of registrations grew significantly in comparison with international domain names.

Viet Nam has the highest number of national domain name registrations in the Southeast Asian region after surpassing Singapore's ".sg".

The country now has more than 28.6 million internet users, accounting for 33 per cent of the population with a yearly growth rate of 170 per cent.
