The Government has issued a Decree to ban the use of electricity to catch fish in a bid to protect the country’s aquatic environment.
Under the Decree, which takes effect from November 1, violators shall be fined between VND 10 million and 15 million (nearly US$500 and US$750).
A fine from VND 1 million to VND 2 million (nearly US$50-100) shall be imposed on those who use electric fishing tools to catch fish.
People who are found to transport and store electric devices for fishing on fishing vessels or on other floating vehicles shall be subjected to a fine between VND 3 million to VND 5 million.
Besides, offenders shall have to their fishing rights taken from three to six months for using electric tools or directly using electricity from generators carried on the fishing vessels and floating vehicles.
Toxic substances banned on sea
The Decree also stipulates that the use of toxic substances or toxic plants by individuals to exploit fish shall be fined up to VND 10 million.
When committing the above regulation, offenders’ certificates on seafood exploitation shall also be revoked for three to six months and they shall have to compensate for damages.
For organizations committing violations, fine will range from VND 20 million to VND 200 million, according to the Decree.
