The total number of COVID-19 infections had risen to 325 after one more imported case was recorded on May 25 morning. The patient flew to Vietnam on May 13 from coronavirus hit Russia.
Though dozens of imported cases were sporadically detected in Vietnam from repatriation flights, no fresh locally transmitted infections have been reported in the country for 39 days in a row.
Vietnam has been repatriating its citizens from a number of pandemic hit countries. A Vietnam Airlines flight is scheduled to bring home as many as 343 Vietnamese citizens, including 141 pregnant women, from Japan on May 25.
Similar repatriation flights from the Republic of Korea, Taiwan (China), Singapore and New Zealand are due to land in Vietnam between May 27 and June 1.
In addition, Vietnam has been receiving skilled foreign specialists to work for key projects in the country. Around 1,000 such specialists are arriving in Quang Ngai province in early June to work at oil and steel projects. Together with Vietnamese returnees, they are considered among groups that are likely to carry the virus into Vietnam.
However, public health authorities say all passengers are placed in quarantine upon arrival according to regulations, therefore suspected cases cannot put the community at risk.
Overall, Vietnam has so far detected 325 cases since the first infection was confirmed in January 2020. As many as 267 cases have recovered and have been discharged from hospital.
The British patient, a Vietnam Airline pilot, known as patient 91 in Vietnam, remains the most severe case in the country. The pilot, who was transferred to Ho Chi Minh City-based Cho Ray hospital on May 22, has been receiving intensive care.
Though his lung function is improving, he is almost dependent on the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine (ECMO).
Elsewhere, the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes the COVID-disease has attacked 213 countries and territories, with more than 5.4 million infections and nearly 344,000 deaths.
