(ĐN)- Dong Nai exported more than 4,000 tonnes of pepper in the first quarter of this year, earning some US$9.8 million, reported Dong Nai Department of Statistics.

The figure saw a year-on-year increase of 1.7 times in volume. Dong Nai’s pepper is now exported mainly to India, France, Germany, the US and the UK.

Average export pepper price in Jan-March was over $2,430 per tonne, down from last year's average price of $50-60.

The domestic pepper price was at VND36,000-37,000 per kilo.

With the sharp increase of pepper planting acreage in many countries, the global pepper market is forecast to maintain supply until at least the end of 2020. Therefore, domestic pepper experts believe this year pepper prices are likely to continue falling.

In Dong Nai, many pepper farmers have switched to other crops to improve their income amid declining pepper prices and disease outbreaks.
