Vietnam squad for AFF Cup 2022 revealed

Head coach Park Hang-seo announced a 31-man Vietnam squad on November 17 ahead of the 2022 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Cup which will take place in late December.

Most notably, defender Nguyen Trong Hoang of SLNA FC made the list after recovering from a serious injury which occurred in July, 2021, during the third round of Asian qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup.

Furthermore, left-back Nguyen Phong Hong Duy of HAGL FC was also called up by the Korean coach.

However, the final gathering witnessed the absence of three key players, including Nguyen Cong Phuong of HAGL FC, Tran Dinh Trong of Binh Dinh FC, and Luong Xuan Truong of HAGL FC, due to poor performances in recent matches.

Moreover, the Vietnamese squad also featured many popular names who are crucial to the team in both defence and attack, while other young players who were also called up to the national team.

Moving forward, the national team are due to take on Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund at 7 p.m. on November 30 at the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi, with the game representing a major test ahead of the 2022 AFF Cup which will run from December 20 to January 16, 2023.

They will also play a friendly match against the Philippines in December before starting their AFF Cup campaign.

The 2022 AFF Cup will be coach Park’s final tournament in his capacity as chief coach.

Vietnam have been drawn in Group B and they will play two away matches against Laos and Singapore on December 21 and December 30, respectively. They will then play at home against Malaysia on December 27 and Myanmar on January 3, 2023.
